The encore presentation of âA Star Is Bornâ is not a marketing gimmick (albeit my ticket to a Manhattan theater cost $26). It's a gift to fans who may be really excited to see these âextrasâ on a Dolby-enhanced large screen. However, these are only extras â cutting-room curios â. And if you go back a few months to âOnce Upon a Deadpool,â a reimagined version of âDeadpool 2â whose creators were ready to treat their original work as hamburger, you begin to ask if this is a coincidence or a trend â and, if the latter, whether it is a good or harmful trend. The essence of films we like is that we do not always wish to see them altered. Even their âdefectsâ become ingrained in their core, and in that sense, they cease to be flaws entirely over time. I went into the âStar Is Bornâ encore version with trust in Bradley Cooper as an artist, and although he didnât ruin his film, he also didnât offer anything I wouldnât want to miss. Great films thrive in the abyss. By definition, special added-value scenes are closer to the shallow.
Additionally, the 2004 soundtrack includes three vocal outtakes: an alternate vocal for Esther's reprise of "It's a New World" while Norman takes his final swim; "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street," which was intended to be part of the "Born in a Trunk" sequence but was cut due to time constraints; and "The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial," which was taken from the only surviving recording of the complete track, a very worn acetate artist reference.

On a recent weekend break, the hotel featured TCM (Turner Classic Movies) on its television lineup, and lo and behold, there was Judy singing and acting her heart out in letterbox and stereo sound. You're the finest, TCM! It was, thank God, the restored version, with that terrible reminder of Warner Brothers' pitiful cowardice in destroying Cukor's initial edit, but also remembering his wonderful use of the widescreen ratio. (A "formatted" version would be completely unwatchable, given the number of scenes acted out by actors positioned on opposing sides of the screen.)

The evening's final Oscar was presented in the King's category for best film. Even after Serena Williams' half-dozenth Laudatio, it was already clear that "A Star is Born" would not be nominated. "Green Book - A Special Friendship," produced by Jim Burke, Charles B. Wessler, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly, and Nick Vallelonga, was named the finest film of the year.
Outstanding Director and Outstanding Film
Alfonso Cuar3n's Roma is already wowing reviewers worldwide, while Spike Lee's work on BlacKkKlansman has already garnered him several standing ovations. Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Damien Chazelle, last year's best director winner, are also being mentioned (First Man). Cooper completing double duty by directing and acting in his brilliant retelling of the classic Hollywood narrative is unlikely to go ignored by the Academy. The film is endearing and emotionally honest at the same time, grounded and unafraid to go a touch nasty. Although the battle for best picture is expected to be particularly competitive this year, A Star Is Born has already risen to the top of many reviewers' predictions lists.
A Star Is Born Oscars 2019 Gewinner
It has been nearly a decade since the Academy expanded the number of films eligible for Best Picture. Prior to that change, no more than five films could be nominated for the coveted prize; currently, up to ten may be. As Variety notes, this has benefited blockbuster films that were previously spurned in favor of smaller, âmore seriousâ independent films. For instance, just two of the nine films nominated in 2017 (Hidden Figures and La La Land) had grossed more than $100 million at the box office. That is excellent news for A Star Is Born, which, based on its opening weekend performance, seems to be on course to achieve the same. However, it also means that there is more space for competition, particularly as the Academy strives to include a broader range of viewpoints in its voting process. While the thought of further Jackson and Ally action is undoubtedly intriguing for some, the original version of the film is already two hours and fifteen minutes long, which is clearly pushing it for a film duration — so this is strictly for diehard fans.

Cooper devotes his whole performance to Jackson â an alcoholic, elderly country-rock star â resulting in an immensely realistic performance that is not just a career high but also deserved of some award season praise. Cooper may have stiff competition from Rami Malek's portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, as well as Viggo Mortensen (Green Book), Ryan Gosling (First Man), and Christian Bale (Vice).
Outstanding Actress
Lady Gaga is fully at ease as a pop artist with otherworldly vocals, but the quieter times of Ally's life show a different side of the performer. Yes, she is electric onstage, but her acting also appears natural offstage. She delivers an outstanding first lead performanceâone that only gets better as the film progresses. Regrettably for Gaga, this year's Best Actress contest will be extremely packed. On the positive side, the Academy has shown a strong preference for younger first-timers in this area in the past.
