The distinctions: This version of the narrative departs considerably from its predecessors in one key way: rather than setting the plot in Hollywood's star-making machinery, Dunne, Didion, and Pierson put it in the music business. As a result, A Star Is Born evolved into a story between an old rock star and a young singer, and its awards-show scene went from the Oscars to the Grammys. Additionally, it became an evident 1970s artifact. This version of A Star Is Born is more sexually explicit than earlier versions â after all, it is 1976 â and John Norman Howard's collapse seems more precipitous than that of his predecessors. Esther's recovery of her husband's name seems to be more inspired by the era's feminist movement: she adds his surname to her entire maiden name rather than addressing herself as âMrs. John Norman Howard.â And artistically, it seems like a product of its age €” in contrast to its Hollywood predecessor's rigorously controlled and meticulously produced nature, it feels looser, with more energetic camera movement.

Bradley Cooper's directorial debut is not the first time A Star Is Born has been conceived. Indeed, one might argue that the picture represents a third rebirth of an ancient soul. The fourth rendition of the famous Hollywood drama is now in theaters. Lady Gaga will also lend her acting abilities to the film, while Bradley Cooper will play an unseen role behind the camera. With Cooper's updated A Star Is Born receiving rave reviews at the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals, we take a look back at previous iterations and the 1937 original, their approach to substance abuse, examination of male fragility and toxicity, and the shaping of women in the star system. Let we begin.

A Star Is Born Film 1976

The film acquired a 15-year-old rating in the United Kingdom, indicating that it is aimed for a mature audience and would be offensive to younger audiences. This is because the film contains profanity and unpleasant visuals. A Star Is Born is an excellent picture for a date night, as shown by the fact that the showing I saw was packed with couples. â Extend

The film's first remake (and arguably its most well-known) has Esther (Garland) establishing a small career in Los Angeles with her band. When previous superstar Norman (Mason) attends one of her performances, he quickly sees her skill and encourages her to pursue an acting career as well. From here, the 1954 version of A Star Is Born essentially follows the original film's narrative, but devotes considerably more time to Esther (later renamed Vicki) as an artist and her abilities. Indeed, this rendition is approximately three hours long... and jam-packed with musical pieces that properly showcase Garland's vocals. Additionally, critics agree that the second version of the film's love narrative is more compelling: The New York Times describes Garland and Mason's connection as "quite evident" (versus "sufficiently believable," as they deem the passion between Gaynor and March).

Ally's manager, Rez, steers her away from her husband's rock influence as she becomes a pop star. Jackson resents her for it, his issues grow worse, he humiliates her at the Grammys, and then he enters rehab. They resolve their differences, but when Jackson completes therapy, Rez informs him that he is impeding his wife's popularity. Jackson succumbs to shame and takes his own life, while Ally blossoms into a celebrity. Now that you're bawling, let's break this all down further.

I had not seen this film until today, having passed up several opportunities to see it over the years out of concern that it would fall short of the 1954 smash starring Judy Garland and James Mason.

I was correct; it considerably outclasses the 1954 remake. Judy Garland is my all-time favorite performer and vocalist, and the songs from the 1954 film are timeless classics, while James Mason never disappoints in any film. However, the 1937 version of the narrative is more sensitive and nuanced. Janet Gaynor is great as the home-grown country girl attempting to make a name for herself in Hollywood, and Fredric March is as compelling as the has-been who is unable to deal with his diminishing worth in Hollywood, all the more so given that he is largely responsible for it.

It is the romantic epic of masculine sacrificial woundedness, and like Doctor Who, it has been regenerating. We had it with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976, Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954, and Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in 1937. It's even regenerating subtly in films like The Artist and La La Land. Bradley Cooper now portrays a booze-addled and downwardly drifting alpha-star who sacrifices his dignity on the showbiz altar of the woman he loves. Cooper directs and co-stars in this immensely watchable and colossally pleasurable new rendition, which is pumped full with pure dramatic dilithium crystals. He appears beside a sensationally excellent Lady Gaga, whose capacity to act as both a regular person and an otherworldly celebrity queen is always at its peak. Gaga's capacity to operate as both an average person and an otherworldly superstar queen is unparalleled.

It all began with 1937's A Star Is Born, the first picture with that title — though purists would argue that 1932's What Price Hollywood? is the original creator of the Star Is Born tale, replete with the ascension of an ingenue and the sad end of her alcoholic mentor. (He would not, however, become mentor and lover until the â37 film.) Both films were produced by David O. Selznick, and were so identical that RKO threatened to sue the legendary producer for plagiarism over ASIB. a-star-is-born Credit: REX/Shutterstock/Moviestore
