The use of technology is, without a doubt, advanced. At a renowned Stork Club dinner party, a heated meeting between Eve and Karen, the wife of a prominent writer, is broadcast live on a screen: we also see the topics of their dispute downstage swilling champagne. However, there is an inescapable irony in the fact that we are always aware that we are seeing a piece of directorâs theatre. This is unmistakably Van Hove's work, while All About Eve represents a bygone theatrical society in which holy creatures like Margo Channing controlled the roost and the writer and director were seen as completely submissive. This is not to say that the performers do not do an excellent job. Even though it's difficult to accept Anderson as a fading beauty, she imbues Margo with a languid drawl and a contemplative knowledge of her own disposability: she's less of a testy termagant than Bette Davis, but more vulnerable in the manner of Tennessee Williams' Blanche Dubois. Lily James brilliantly catches Eve's combination of faux-naivety and sneaky cunning, and her features positively glow as the camera zooms in.
