On the Come Up is Thomas's second book and centers on Bri, a young girl who aspires to be a rapper. Bri's life is difficult since her father died when she was a child, her mother is impoverished, and she has a reputation as a hoodlum. She resolves to express herself via singing. That song becomes popular, but for the wrong reasons, and she gets embroiled in scandal.
