Taking down a white supremacist would have been an excellent video. However, Owens was the only one who acknowledged white supremacy at the event, mocking those who have dubbed her a âblack white supremacistâ for her views. Kirk instantly set the tone when he approached the stage, after enthusiastic introductions by Sen. Steve Daines and Rep. Greg Gianforte. âI am an Illinois native, and my grandmother was a lifelong Republican,â Kirk said. âShe died in the 1990s and has remained a Democrat since.â It's a joke, but it's also a posture: promoting unfounded current allegations of electoral fraud. Kirk emphasized his commitment to free speech (âI am a firm believer that when people stop speaking, bad things happenâ) and the organizationâs commitment to diverse perspectives (âEven if there are left-wing Marxists in the audience, you are truly welcomeâ) while emphasizing the courage required to adhere to those principles (âWe are the only conservative duo to speak at UC Berkeley, USC, and UCLA in the same semester and survivedâ). Rather than dumb spouses or nagging wives, the punchlines were repeatedly clueless leftists.
The whole video, which I've seen several times, makes no suggestion that journalists took Owens' comments out of context. In response to a question from the audience about whether the momentum behind nationalism would endure, Owens said, âI honestly have no issues with the term ânationalism.â I believe that the concept is tainted by elitists who genuinely want globalism. Globalism is precisely what I oppose. Thus, anytime we mention nationalism, the first thing that comes to mind, at least in America, is Hitler. She continued, âHe was a national socialist. However, if Hitler only wanted to make Germany great and to ensure that everything ran well, that is OK. The issue is that he desired and desired to live outside of Germany. He desired globalization. He desired that everyone be German and speak German. âTo my mind, this is not nationalism.â Three Turning Point USA chapters even spoke out against Owens' remarks. David M. Perry, a columnist and historian, tweeted to her: âI'd want to tell you that Hitler's issue was not that he desired to conquer other countries, but that he desired to murder Jews, handicapped people, Roma, Communists, and others.â
Owens attended the University of Rhode Island and earned an undergraduate degree in journalism.
