The ceiling was coated in a sticky patina of water stains, railroad soot, filth, and grime, but the primary component of the brown sludge was tobaccoâdecades and decades of cigarette smoke billowing up with no means of escape. To clean it all while retaining the ceiling's sheen required meticulous labor with just mild sudsy water and delicate Q-tip washing. The ceiling is adorned with an array of astrological signs, beginning with the crab in the northwest and extending to the southeast. The arrangement of the signs is actually reversed from the natural night sky, which was most likely a design error on the part of the original designer. Cornelius Vanderbilt (the terminal's original owner and constructor) brilliantly interpreted the anomaly in 1913 as a portrayal of the celestial bodies from aboveâas if by God.
