Christian Bale makes a strong comeback after a lackluster performance in 'Terminator: Salvation,' and it's refreshing to see him using his voice manipulation muscles again, as I was starting to believe he'd become stuck on his Batman-style snarl. As the FBI agent hunting Dillinger, he is an intriguing character due to his passion and had the potential to be a genuinely compelling character, but, like Depp, Bale is never given the opportunity to flesh out his character. The soundtrack is familiar from prior crime films of this kind, yet it works for the most part. I would not purchase the music to this film, but it added nothing to the experience. Additionally, songs from the 1930s are played throughout, and for the most part, they work quite well with the story's many montage moments.
