Additionally, the Four Horsemen are pursued by a conceited former magician (Morgan Freeman) who has amassed a fortune by divulging the secrets of well-known tricks. Freeman has the ability to make even the most convoluted exposition seem wonderful (see: Christopher Nolan's Batman films or the latest "Oblivion"); that is, for the most part, what he is here to accomplish. Making Freeman the film's de facto on-camera narrator is the film's most deft move, particularly given how much of the third act is spent adjusting his all-knowing screen image.
Mabry tries a little of this when his men catch the Horsemen, but the Horsemen constantly undercut him by making snide remarks and pre-empting his explanation of how he pulled off the Macau teleporter trick.

Building on familiar sleight-of-hand skills (influenced by illusionist David Copperfield), the film glides forward effortlessly due to the sense of mystery evoked from the film's opening shots. As each new individual is revealed, the proceedings gather speed, initially succeeding in hooking you. However, you know things are going to go wrong when the film never lets up on the twists and turns, except when it deviates into a predictably tedious almost-romantic track between Mlanie Laurent and Mark Ruffalo, who play Interpol and FBI agents, respectively, who are on the hunt for the Four Horsemen. The picture stumbles in its last act, when all of the build-up, deceit, and grand trip leading up to the climax â the prestige, if you will â proves to be a damp squib, with the final few twists being foreseeable from a mile away.
