As is the case with the majority of adolescent television productions in the United States, One of Us Is Lying continues to include characters that seem too old to be high school students. To be honest, it's a little disturbing. Nonetheless, it's an engrossing murder mystery interwoven with your daily dose of adolescent drama. This is a very binge-worthy program. Until they altered the conclusion somewhat.

The book's idea was intriguing. I discovered it during the pre-release period and, based on the small description provided, I was immediately fascinated and found myself thinking about it every few days leading up to the release. Clearly a homage to John Hughes with a modern spin, the concept was strong. Five children are placed in jail and only four are released – a contemporary setting for the age-old "who dunnit?" The plot between the characters was excellent. Each character's background was spiced up with enough shocks and distinct elements to keep it intriguing and current. There were several details omitted. These, on the other hand, were more like to lines and less to red herrings. No concept compelled you to intellectually pursue it. You've just added that to your list of things to remember.

âWe are thrilled that One of Us Is Lying's intriguing and binge-worthy first season struck such a chord with our YA audience,â said Lisa Katz, president scripted programming at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. âThe fanbase for the series is tremendously enthusiastic, and we can't wait to continue delivering twists and turns that will keep fans on the edge of their seats,â Saleh and Madrona executive produce with 5 More Minutes Productions' John Sacchi and Matt Groesch, as well as Jan Oxenberg, Molly Nussbaum, and Bill Johnson.

Mr. Avery is a give-detention-first, never-ask-questions kind of person, but there is still time for him to reconsider. I clear my throat and begin raising my hand, but Nate's smile widens. &;Mr. Avery, the phone you discovered was not mine. I'm not sure how it made its way into my luggage. This is mine,&; I declare, waving my iPhone's melon-striped cover in front of me. To be honest, you'd have to be a complete moron to bring a phone inside Mr. Avery's lab. He has a stringent no-phone policy and spends the first 10 minutes of each session rummaging through bags as if he were the head of airport security and we were all under surveillance. As usual, my phone was in my locker.

Initially, I wasn't a fan of the voice acting. It took a chapter or two for me to discover what irritated me the most. This has less to do with the voice performers and more to do with the audio book's director/producer. The voice actors were excellent, in fact, they were probably ideally suited for the parts they performed. What was unjust was that they were had to narrate not just their own character's voice, but also the voices of the other characters throughout their tales. This meant that Nate's voice had to be provided by four separate performers. Four separate performers were required to play Addy, and so forth. This would have been MUCH BETTER if the producer/director had let the actor who voiced his/her role to do so EACH TIME, regardless of who of the four characters was narrating. Continuity, gentlemen... What emotional response did this book elicit in you? Are you angry, sad, or disappointed?

âI have been falsely accused,â I mumble and yank open the door. Three other kids are already seated, and I take a moment to welcome them. Not the bunch I anticipated. With one exception. Nate Macauley leans back in his chair and smirks at me. âYou made an incorrect turn? This is a detention situation, not a student council one.â

The plot bears a striking similarity to this classic 1980s film. McManus explains that when she came up with the concept for the book, she thought it would be interesting to write an update of that film, which she adored, but with a twist. And the term âThe Breakfast Club with murderâ stayed in my brain. âI adored One of Us Is Lying. For me, the mystery element was arguably the most crucial, and it pleasantly surprised me. It everything fits together beautifully and makes sense. While you may have guessed it before to the disclosure, it's still enjoyable when the author explains how all the other little elements fit together as well.

Is Power or Secrets the True Killer?

According to the book's back cover, âEveryone has secrets, correct? What counts most is how far you are willing to go to defend them.â However, I believe that it was not the secrets that dominated the characters, but the need for fame, power, and authority. It was a miserable adolescent who dubbed himself âthe omniscient narratorâ and reveled in seeing people's lives destroyed. And then there was another man, a âcontrol freak,â as Ashton describes him, who, rather than saving Simon's life, assisted him in committing suicide and seizing control of his Tumblr account.
