It's a straightforward, amusing idea, but it can't expect to live up to the preceding numbers. However, nothing could possibly be possible. Mulaney, like fellow three-timer Adam Driver, is as dependable a host as the program has these days, guaranteeing a solid monologue and at least one show-stopping skit while also elevating the bar. When combined with Byrne's magnificent interludes, this episode ranks with Driver and Eddie Murphy as the season's greatest to yet.

Citing the Harriet Tubman Visa card, Barnes & Noble editions that transformed white authors' protagonists into black characters, and boxer Deontay Wilder's sparkly costume, Redd declares that March was a terrible month and requests that we collectively grant black people April. Redd hasn't had this much time on Update, and he's not squandering it. His jokes are razor-sharp, his delivery is strong, and there are some well-observed concepts. To be honest, it's a peculiar sketch regarding âstatutoryâ (the sketch's world), which then brings up another bag of worms concerning Maria's (McKinnon) age, as she sings âI'm old enough, but it's still a little diceyâ to round off the scene. Strong and Mulaney, as well as McKinnon and Beck Bennett, make it work as they enter the fray. However, it remains weird. âSo I worked hard, got less fascinating, and now they're going to put me on the cover of âSNLâ Magazine.â

Just as the skit was about to develop into epic proportions, musical guest David Byrne waltzed in as the âbaggage handler who throws everyone's stuff into Long Island Sound.â The former Talking Heads singer seems to have been hanging around the airport for some time, advising viewers that if they stay long enough, they will âlearn the secrets of LaGuardiaâ â fascinating! David then led the group in another musical act that was every bit as amusing as Jake's! âWe're on a plane to nowhere,â the group started singing. Mulaney Took A Once-In-A-Lifetime Trip To Chicago With Lorne Michaels
Mulaney was asked to join Lorne Michaels and Steve Higgins on a reconnaissance trip to Chicago during his first season as a writer on Saturday Night Live. Mulaney has already treated theatre aficionados to show tunes and Broadway allusions on the tiny screen this week. The comedian penned IFC's latest Documentary Now! episode Original Cast Album: Co-op, a parody of the film Original Cast Album: Company. Additionally, he appeared as Simon Sawyer, a (adoring) spoof of a 1970s Stephen Sondheim.

In a new episode of the 1950s soap opera Say, Those Two Don't Seem to Like Each Other, competing sisters (Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant) compete for the affections of a visiting admiral. The last time, their attempts were foiled by their seductive third sister (Jennifer Lopez), but this time, it is their baby brother Julian (Mulaney) who has lately returned from the military, where he has established a reputation as âpass around party bottomâ. This segment is far better than the last rendition, owing mostly to Mulaney's oblivious twink. David Byrne is the musical guest for the evening. He alternates between staggering about the stage in front of a massive spotlight and being supported up by his dancing back-up band as he sings the Talking Heads classic Once in a Lifetime. It's a brilliantly theatrical performance in the tradition of Byrne and SNL's most ambitious and engaging musical act in recent memory.

Mike Pence (Beck Bennett) is besieged by Democratic presidential contenders during a news conference in which he attempts to allay anxieties about COVID-19. Mike Bloomberg (Fred Armisen) delivers some awful Spanish before being taunted by Elizabeth Warren (Kate McKinnon); Joe Biden (John Mulaney) tells a rambling, inappropriate anecdote; Bernie Sanders (Larry David) celebrates his victories; and Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar (Colin Jost and Rachel Dratch) aim for the moderates. While the comedy sometimes seems like aimless conversation, there are a few good gags that transcend mere responses to news. The way David's sensibility intersects with Bernie's is another strength, and Biden's weird monologue is fantastic, even if Mulaney isn't quite the impressionist that Jason Sudeikis is.
