The pristiophoriformes, sometimes known as saw sharks, are a rare and unusual shark order. They have a saw-like snout with strong teeth that they utilize to cut their prey. They are most prevalent in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The @common sawshark and the @longnose sawshark are their most well-known species. In this order, all sharks: Pristiophoridae is the family name for all sawsharks. Pliotrema and Pristiophorus are the two genera of extant sawsharks. Pristiophorus has four species, while Pliotrema is a single species (that is, only a single species, P. warreni, is recognized). There has been no research on the phylogenetic relationships of sawshark species.

Pristiophoridae is made up of two genera. The Common Sawshark (Pristiophorus cirratus) is a classic pristiophoroid, with the rostral saw, large nasal barbels, gill slits on the side of the head, and absence of an anal fin that defines the group. The detail of a rostral tooth, seen in the inset to the far right, shows the shallow root. The type genus of the family comes first (or the subfamily, if subfamilies are known), followed by the remaining genera in chronological order of description (and alphabetical order). The genus' type species are listed first in chronological order (and alphabetical order), with misapplied names placed last in a light gray typeface.
