As a famous Swedish filmmaker recognized for his boundary-pushing work in music videos, concert films, and stage plays, among other things, it's unsurprising that writer/director Jonas kerlund is in Sundance with Lords of Chaos, a visually bold drama with a strong musical component. Lords of Chaos, starring Rory Culkin, Jack Kilmer, Sky Ferreira, Valter Skarsgrd, and Emory Cohen, is based on the extraordinary real tale of Mayhem, the most notorious band in the Norwegian black metal scene. Following the death of their frontman in the early 1990s, Mayhem founder Euronymous (Culkin) introduced a mixture of satanism and violent anarchy into the band's music in order to increase sales, and things quickly spiraled out of control. Exacerbating Euronymousâ thoughts, bassist Varg Vikernes (Cohen) embarked on a churn-burning rampage that culminated in a violent feud between two comrades.
Black metal makes its way to Norway with the establishment of the band Mayhem, which is fronted by a young guitarist going by the moniker Euronymous (Rory Culkin). Mayhem's popularity grows, and the band is joined by a notorious Swedish singer known as Dead (Jack Kilmer), who is renowned for his outrageous stage antics. When the band is on tour, they encounter a fan called Varg Vikernes (Emory Cohen), whom Euronymous first dismisses. However, as Varg becomes further involved with Mayhem, tensions escalate and violence takes control, wrecking the band.

Cohen made his feature film debut alongside Ezra Miller in 2008's Afterschool. The film debuted at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim. [11] Following that, he starred in the 2010 drama picture The Hungry Ghosts. [12] He co-starred with Bradley Cooper and Dane DeHaan in Derek Cianfrance's murder thriller film The Place Beyond the Pines in 2012. The film earned generally favorable reviews[13] and was a financial success at the box office. [14]
