This year, I have the distinct honor of hosting the 15th annual International Woman of Courage (IWOC) Award ceremony. The awardees this year exemplify how daring women create a better society. These women have shown extraordinary bravery and leadership in their advocacy for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women's empowerment â often at considerable personal danger and sacrifice. We know that empowered women are agents of change. I am very thrilled to recognize each of this year's IWOC honorees and even more honored that the First Lady will join us for the occasion. The US is committed to ensuring that gender equality and women's empowerment are essential pillars of our foreign and national security policies. Today, as we do every day, we reaffirm our commitment to women's empowerment and gender equality in the United States and around the world. The United States is prepared to assist and promote every woman's and girl's health, economic, political, and human rights, because when women are empowered, we all benefit.
The emancipation movement began in the 1960s and culminated in the enactment of the Voting Rights Act, which guaranteed the right to vote to all women. With the proliferation of the internet, feminism and the battle against gender injustice saw a renaissance. Now, we observe International Women's Day annually in the goal of achieving a truly equitable society.
International Women's Day is a time to celebrate progress toward gender equality and women's empowerment, but also to reflect critically on those achievements and work for a larger global momentum toward gender equality. It is a day to celebrate women's remarkable actions and to unite as a force for global gender equality.
On March 19, 1911, Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland commemorated the inaugural International Women's Day. Over one million people joined demonstrations in support of women's suffrage, representation, education, and workers' rights. Over the following several years, the holiday was observed in an increasing number of nations across Europe. It was not until March 8, 1975, that the United Nations designated it as an official holiday during International Women's Year.
