Formerly inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, who departed soon after the arrival of the Europeans; arrowheads and pottery have been discovered near the Cooper River. The Anchorage Tavern is Somers Point's oldest continually operating business. Since 1874, the three-story wood building with slate roof and original illuminated âBARâ signs on top has been in operation. It is situated at 823 Bay Avenue in the lovely Bay Historical District. Since 1998, Donald Mahoney, CEO Chef/Owner, feels himself fortunate to have acquired a piece of Somers Point history.
